PT>

Federal Bureau of Investigations

The FBI reported today that 57 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty last year; 83 officers died in accidents while performing their official duties; and 59,201 officers suffered assaults while on duty. The 2007 edition of Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted released today provides comprehensive tabular data about these incidents and brief narratives describing the fatal felonious attacks.

Felonious Deaths

The 57 felonious line-of-duty deaths took place during 51 separate incidents. The deaths occurred in 25 states and Puerto Rico. The number of officers feloniously killed in 2007 increased by nine compared with the 2006 figure (48 officers). A five-year comparison shows an increase of five line-of-duty deaths compared with data for 2003 (52 officers), and a decrease of four deaths compared with data for 1998 (61 officers).

Officer Profile: Among the officers who were feloniously killed, the average age was 37 years. The victim officers had served in law enforcement for an average of 10 years at the time of the fatal incidents. All of the slain officers were male; 47 officers were white.

Circumstances: Of the 57 officers feloniously killed, 16 of the slain officers were involved in arrest situations, 16 were ambushed, 11 were performing traffic stops, five were answering disturbance calls, and four were investigating suspicious persons or circumstances. Of the remaining five officers who were feloniously killed in the line of duty, three were in tactical situations (e.g., high-risk entry); one was performing investigative duties; and one had custody of a prisoner for transport.

Weapons: Offenders used firearms to kill 55 of the 57 victim officers. Of these 55 officers, 38 were slain with handguns, eight with rifles, and eight with shotguns. The type of firearm was not reported for one officer?s death. Two officers were killed with vehicles that were used as weapons.

Region: An analysis of the data by region showed that 31 of the felonious deaths occurred in the South, nine in the West, seven in the Northeast, and nine in the Midwest. One of the deaths took place in Puerto Rico.

Suspects: Law enforcnement agencies identified 62 alleged assailants in connection with the 57 felonious line-of-duty deaths. Fifty-eight of the assailants had prior criminal records, and 19 of them were under judicial supervision at the time of the felonious incidents.

Accidental Deaths

Eighty-three law enforcement officers were killed in accidents while performing their duties in 2007. Automobile accidents claimed the highest number (49) of accidental line-of-duty deaths.

The Nation?s law enforcement agencies reported to the FBI?s Uniform Crime Reporting Program that 59,201 officers were assaulted while performing their duties. The largest percentage of victim officers (31.7 percent) were assaulted while responding to disturbance calls (family quarrels, bar fights, etc.). Assailants used personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.) in 80.2 percent of the incidents, firearms in 3.7 percent of the incidents, and knives or other cutting instruments in 1.7 percent of the incidents. In 14.4 percent of the assaults, other types of weapons were used.

Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted, 2007, is available exclusively on the FBI?s Web site . Authorities have said Peterson was angered by the idea that Murray was dating someone else.

After breaking down the door, Peterson fired at least 30 shots from an AR-15 assault rifle he was issued as a member of the Forest County Sheriff's SWAT team. Peterson shot and killed himself hours later after police efforts to get him to surrender failed.

He killed Murray, 18; Bradley Schultz, 20; Lindsey Stahl, 14; Aaron Smith, 20; Lianna Thomas, 18; and Katrina McCorkle, 18. Charlie Neitzel, 21, was shot three times but survived by playing dead.

The parents of Schultz, Stahl, Thomas and McCorkle joined Neitzel in the lawsuit.

According to the lawsuit, Dennee and Van Cleve had been warned that Peterson was a "violent person and a danger," and they knew that Peterson had abused Murray.

None of the complaints against Peterson were investigated, the lawsuit said, adding that the sheriff and police chief failed to protect the public from the dangers posed by Peterson.

Van Cleve and the city attorney for Crandon did not immediately return telephone messages Monday. The sheriff's dispatcher who answered a call for the Crandon Police Department said Dennee was not in his office Monday afternoon.

The city of Crandon and Forest County earlier denied the families' claims seeking more than $5 million in damages. Those decisions opened the door for the civil lawsuit.

The two insurance companies named as defendants in the lawsuit are the League of Wisconsin Municipality Mutual Insurance and Wisconsin County Mutual Insurance Corp.

Copyright 2008 The Associated Press.
BOSTON (AP)—B.J. Upton, Evan Longoria and the rest of the Tampa Bay Rays
have quickly become a playoff monster.

Upton hit a three-run home run and Longoria also homered off a suddenly
shaky Jon Lester, then Rocco Baldelli and Carlos Pena cleared the Green Monster
later Monday to give the Rays a 9-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox and a 2-1
lead in the AL championship series.

Matt Garza held Boston scoreless through six innings as Tampa Bay put the
defending World Series champions in a postseason hole for the first time since
they overcame a 3-1 deficit in last year’s ALCS against Cleveland. Now the Rays
right-hander, who thought he was sent to baseball purgatory when he was traded
from Minnesota to Tampa Bay last offseason, has brought them within two wins of
their first AL pennant.

“When I first got traded, yes, there was a doubt. But walking into the
clubhouse in spring training, it was like, ‘We could actually pull this thing
off,”’ said Garza, the only Tampa Bay pitcher to lose in the first-round series
against the White Sox.

Series.

That’s the way they’ve played it all year.

After ducking a pitch thrown over his head the previous day, Victorino and
much-traveled pinch-hitter Matt Stairs delivered two-run homers in the eighth

“This was the biggest game we’ve won so far,” Philadelphia manager Charlie
Manuel said. “But the next one is even bigger. That’s kind of how we look at
it.”

Brad Lidge got his first four-out save for the Phillies, remaining perfect
this season. It was the first time the visiting team has won a game in 12
meetings between the clubs this year.

 MILLVALE --

A man climbing out of a second-story window onto a roof to escape a fire in Millvale fell through, WTAE Channel 4 Action News learned.

Sky 4 was over the scene of a house fire on Davis Street in Millvale in the 6 p.m. hour Monday.

The first thing firefighters did when they arrived at the scene was to take care of Samuel Smith, who, from the looks of things, may have landed on his head when he fell through the roof.

Investigators said he may have lost feeling below his neck and paramedics rushed him to Allegheny General Hospital. As of Tuesday morning, the man was listed in good condition.

"If there were no smoke detectors -- because I think the guy was sleeping, I'm not sure -- if there were no smoke detectors, we would have been in there still," said Tim Cundiff, whose house was damaged.

One house seriously damaged, possibly destroyed, and four other homes have smoke and water damage. Many of the residents are renters who do not have insurance.

"It's very difficult. Access was definitely a problem with narrow streets and being on a hill," Millvale Fire Chief Jim Tunstall said.

"I know it's a rowhouse and it could have been really bad. If we had a strong wind, it could have been really bad," Millvale Mayor Vincent Cinski said.

Firefighters said this fire doesn't appear to be suspicious, and the fire marshal continues to investigate.

Copyright 2008 by ThePittsburghChannel. PT>
By Edward Colimore; Inquirer Staff Writer
The Philadelphia Inquirer

Whenever Gary Cundiff thought about retiring from the Cherry Hill Police Department, he imagined himself "sitting on a beach, drinking a cold beer."

He never saw himself in the dusty central highlands of Afghanistan, teaching police work and light infantry tactics to Afghans in more than 100-degree heat.

"Not in my wildest dreams," said Cundiff, 62, in Cherry Hill recently on a two-week break from his duties 8,500 miles away in Afghanistan's Uruzgan province.

"But there's nothing more attractive than working with great young Americans, keeping terrorists busy and putting them out of business. It's way more important than sitting on a beach," he said.

The longtime township resident joined DynCorp International, a military contractor, within weeks of his retirement from the Cherry Hill police in April 2007. Cundiff departed for Afghanistan the same month, and is instructing police trainees at the Army Special Forces' remote Firebase Ripley.

His work also takes him on patrols to police checkpoints and nearby military outposts.

On the day he came home last month, the Marine veteran "lost a buddy at a satellite base." Many Americans and Afghans have been killed or wounded through direct attacks, suicide bombers, and improvised explosive devices, he said.

"There are Taliban all over the area," Cundiff said. In August, "we had a close encounter with a suicide bomber. Our intelligence told us he was on his way to attack our base, and we gave him a warm welcome."

The man was dropped off by a motorcyclist and was walking toward the base armed with explosives laden with nuts, bolts and ball bearings intended to inflict maximum casualties.

"Special Forces and Afghan police lit him up," Cundiff said. "He went up in a blinding flash of light and a mushroom cloud."

Cundiff has had a long history of public service as a soldier, volunteer firefighter and police officer.

After nearly 36 years in the township police department, he thought he'd seen it all. He worked at the Garden State Race Track fire in 1977 and at the fatal shooting of six people at a North Kings Highway office building in 1971.

But nothing affected him more than the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, where Cundiff lost three friends in the Port Authority Police.

"I was working that day" and headed to New York City before authorities "froze everybody's movement," he recalled. "I left for ground zero, and was involved in bringing out the injured and bodies of those who died."

For more than four months, Cundiff volunteered all his spare time to work at the World Trade Center site.

"I thought, with my police and military training, I had something to offer," said Cundiff, whose work in Afghanistan was honored by Cherry Hill Mayor Bernie Platt at a Sept. 22 ceremony.

"Gary has gone beyond the call of duty more than any public servant I have ever known," said former Cherry Hill Police Capt. Robert Schuenemann, now the township's public records coordinator. "He's always the first one to volunteer. He's unbelievable."

It was while volunteering on the security task force at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah that a friend suggested to Cundiff the possibility of working in Iraq as a police adviser and instructor for a military contractor.

"I applied for the job but that closed, so I applied for Afghanistan," Cundiff said. "I was first stationed at Kandahar in the southern central highlands." He later moved to Firebase Ripley about 100 miles north.

"My assignment was working with a team providing rudimentary police training, but a lot of it was light infantry tactics and firearms training."

Uruzgan is a far cry from the Garden State.

"Boy, is it ever," he said. "It's very hot, dry and dusty. The temperature gets up to 150 degrees in the summer. Sometimes, we have dust storms.

"The temperature becomes more moderate in November, and we have freezing temperatures beginning in December and January, with a fair amount of snow."

"The accommodations aren't that bad," said Cundiff, who has been living in a mud-block building equipped with a small air conditioner.

"But they're not so good in the field. We're not talking about a five-star hotel by any stretch. It's always dusty and dirty."

Some days are "harder than others, but it's all good work," he said. "We can't just go over to shoot everything up, bang-bang, and think the Taliban and al-Qaeda are going to fall down or leave.

"During our Civil War, the Union forces had to stay in the South to keep order," Cundiff said. "We have to give these people a chance to work into this century. They have 98 percent illiteracy."

The lack of education "makes it easy for fanatic mullahs to tell the people that the Holy Koran says to go out and kill, when it doesn't. The people of Afghanistan are wonderful and hospitable."

Cundiff said 14 Afghans he trained as officers and considered friends have been killed. "The Taliban have been killing an enormous number of police, Afghan soldiers, civilians and children," he said.

"Not a week goes by when we don't have casualties. We're always unloading [bodies from] the helicopters. I have medical training, so I help at the surgical center, offering another set of hands."

While home, Cundiff - who plays the bagpipe - participated in the funeral for Philadelphia Police Sgt. Patrick McDonald, 30, who was gunned down last month in North Philadelphia.

He has played at services for Americans, Australians and Dutch service members in Afghanistan. And he helped create a memorial, with stainless-steel name plates, for those killed while assigned to the firebase, Schuenemann said.

"I'm not there for just the money," said Cundiff, who returned to duty on Oct. 1. "We can't leave Afghanistan. We have to win the fight there and give these people a chance to control their own destiny."

Cundiff isn't sure what awaits when his tour ends in April. He has a girlfriend in Marlton who will be glad to have him home for good.

"But if there's something I need to complete," he said, "I could stay longer."

Contact staff writer Edward Colimore at 856-779-3833 or ecolimore@phillynews.com.

Copyright 2008 LexisNexis, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
